A recent YouGov/The Economist poll reveals that 68 percent of Americans believe that the United States has become “out of control” under the leadership of President Joe Biden.
The poll, conducted among 1,755 Americans from April 28 to 30, asked the respondents how they perceive “things in this country these days.” Sixty-eight percent of respondents believe that the nation is veering “out of control.” By contrast, only 16 percent view the U.S. as “under control.”
Moreover, the poll reveals that the perception of a nation spiraling out of control transcends partisan lines. A higher percentage of Democrats believe “things are out of control” (48 percent) rather than “under control” (31 percent). Meanwhile, a substantial 70 percent of Independents share the sentiment, along with nearly 90 percent of Republicans. Only 11 percent of Independents feel the country is under control. This perception is also held in high numbers across various demographic categories such as race, gender, age and income.
The poll also reveals that 66 percent of Americans feel the country is “on the wrong track,” while 21 percent believe it is “generally headed in the right direction.” Twelve percent did not offer an opinion either way.
Those who believe the country is headed in the wrong direction include 72 percent of Independents, 87 percent of Republicans, and 42 percent of Democrats, with majorities of all age, gender and income brackets sharing this viewpoint.
The sentiment of unrest is rooted in a multitude of issues plaguing the nation. Widespread anti-Gaza genocide protests on college campuses, a 40-year high inflation rate currently wreaking havoc on the economy and a persistent illegal immigration crisis along the southern border have all contributed to this prevailing sense of unease among the public.
The Biden administration’s poor performance on those issues has affected the president’s approval rating.
Recent survey shows Biden’s approval rating stands at 37 percent, with 58 percent expressing widespread disapproval of his presidential performance. Specifically regarding his management of inflation, Biden garners an abysmal approval rating of just 29 percent, with 61 percent expressing dissatisfaction with his approach to the issue.
Based on the survey, voters prioritize the issue on inflation and prices, with 23 percent of respondents identifying it as the “most pressing.” Additionally, nearly all respondents (96 percent) view the issue on inflation and prices as “important,” with 77 percent considering it “very important.”
These dismal approval ratings are reflected in other polls. A recent Gallup survey rated Biden’s average job approval rating at only 38 percent as he completed his 13th quarter in office. (Related: GALLUP POLL: President Joe Biden’s job approval rating slips to 38%.)
According to the Gallup poll, throughout his 13th quarter, various challenges persisted both domestically and internationally. The conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza continued, alongside heightened levels of illegal border crossings at the U.S. southern border.
Additionally, a bipartisan immigration reform bill negotiated in the Senate failed to pass in the House of Representatives, while signs of increasing inflation emerged despite positive macroeconomic indicators. The stock market, which had seen record highs during the quarter, experienced recent fluctuations.
